There is really no such thing as “socialism in one country”, the leadership in the USSR wasn’t trying to be autonomous, they were just saying that they could continue to hold the fort for awhile while the comintern worked its magic, they never gave up on a spirit of internationalism.

Stalin said: “But the overthrow of the power of the bourgeoisie and establishment of the power of the proletariat in one country does not yet mean that the complete victory of socialism has been ensured. After consolidating its power and leading the peasantry in its wake the proletariat of the victorious country can and must build a socialist society.
